January 11th, 2010Second Opinion

This is a sequel to my post on 4th about my accident. The orthopedic at the hospital where I was taken to immediately after the accident diagnosed broken wrist joint and recommended surgery and fixing of plate as it is not just bone but a joint. But he said that it is not emergency and I have seven days to undergo that operation. I thought his logic of having a plate fixed as sound but wanted to have it nearer my home if possible and came away with the x-rays.

Next day I went to an orthopedic who is also a professor in a renowned government medical college.  His initial reaction was one of incredulity when I mentioned the recommendation and was irritated to say the least. “We teach them not to do surgery unless absolutely necessary but once they start practicing they forget because of their commitments”. So saying he just recommended further casting of the wrist which, he said, will heal in 4 weeks. By the way, he put a casting which is hard like POP but light. My arm is out of the slings, but the disability remains. I am resigned to the fact that I have to type only with my left hand. Maybe I should post some videos to avoid typing:-)

edit on 12th: Same thing happened in 2002 when I slipped and fell, from a bike, due to sand on road and sand in road layer’s head. X-rays showed hair line crack. The first doctor recommended nothing but sling and rest. His senior recommended plate. Incidentally he was a retired professor from a renowned government medical college!

January 4th, 2010Please wear seat belt

Yesterday I learnt two painful lessons.

1. I should not lend a new breed of car to a person used to old model cars.

2. I should wear seat belt even if the ride is just for 500 mtrs near my home and even if I am just guiding the driver.

I have a broken wrist and typing with my left hand.
