August 20th, 2011Accidents waiting to happen

This is how most of our roads are repaired. Shoddy work. Unfinished finishing. No follow up. As long as no one dies everything is normal! Of course it is not unique to Chennai alone.

Traffic sense, road sense, sense of safety, following rules or common sense;whatever you call it there is no escape of a sense of deja-vu when you talk/think of our traffic and road users. The saddest part is no one seem to feel that what they are doing is wrong. Or everyone like to follow the majority. Or most of them think that they have the most urgent need for riding/driving. Or they want to kill or be killed.

While people want to take only the shortest and quickest way to their destination ignoring Red Signal, No U-turns, No Free Left turns, No Right turns, No Entry, Pedestrians and so on our Corporation is also not far behind. Laying of roads is done rarely in a scientific or systematic way resulting in roads with a war zone look after rains, big or small. Agreed that our country is labour intensive and using machines will deprive our own needy of a square meal. But why no one is worried about quality? Even unskilled labour can be taught of the need for quality. But why is it not done? Is it because our Corporation is not capable of doing work of quality or because good quality work will result in drying up of new tenders and connected things?!

Everyone know the answers but all are scared to question. Instead they also do the same thing if and when they get the chance. Looks like a vicious circle!

roadlaying

This is the water logging in front of our house. It occurs after even a small rain. The drainage is on the opposite side which is marked with ‘x’ but the slope is given towards our side! Everytime the road is relaid in the same way even if pointed out the logic. Only once, few years back,  they tried to correct when a complaint was made in the Indian Express ‘Action Please’. After that it is back to square one.

The raise given to the right side of the drainage point only favours car(s) going in and out of the opposite compound rather than draining of rain water. Some workers from the corporation, ’employed privately’, tried to raise the left side and  cover the drainage opening also but stopped after objection was raised by us.

The purpose of this post is not to highlight the problem faced by us. We are used to it and I am even thinking of constructing a RWH structure inside our compound and divert that water to it.

This shows the way our Corporation works! This shows that plans are only on paper and money power is what executes the plan, sometimes literally. Money power and political power complement each other and those who have neither only watch from the side lines waiting for elections, not to try to elect good(!) candidates but get their ’30 silvers’ for closing their eyes for the next five years.

Moral of the story is don’t blame anyone else for your plight. Walk/ride/drive carefully!
