November 1st, 2010Wrong Right Turns

Usual sight on road. We should remember this. Otherwise we will end up being ‘remembered’.

August 7th, 2010Which is right or wrong?

Coming from Mandhaveli, want to take a left turn on Beach Road. If I go by the sign board I cannot do that. I wasted nearly 1 minute to know that:-(

Traffic sense, road sense, sense of safety, following rules or common sense;whatever you call it there is no escape of a sense of deja-vu when you talk/think of our traffic and road users. The saddest part is no one seem to feel that what they are doing is wrong. Or everyone like to follow the majority. Or most of them think that they have the most urgent need for riding/driving. Or they want to kill or be killed.

While people want to take only the shortest and quickest way to their destination ignoring Red Signal, No U-turns, No Free Left turns, No Right turns, No Entry, Pedestrians and so on our Corporation is also not far behind. Laying of roads is done rarely in a scientific or systematic way resulting in roads with a war zone look after rains, big or small. Agreed that our country is labour intensive and using machines will deprive our own needy of a square meal. But why no one is worried about quality? Even unskilled labour can be taught of the need for quality. But why is it not done? Is it because our Corporation is not capable of doing work of quality or because good quality work will result in drying up of new tenders and connected things?!

Everyone know the answers but all are scared to question. Instead they also do the same thing if and when they get the chance. Looks like a vicious circle!

September 10th, 2009Villains in traffic!

One thing I found irritating and comical while watching movies in my younger days was the rape scene. Remember, the villain chasing the heroine, tearing her blouse, pulling on her saree, and…………trying to kiss her on her lips!!!!!! Kiss her lips….! The girl turning her face away, villain trying, girl turning her face, villain trying and losing grip in that excitement, girl running away, villain catching her again, trying to kiss her lips…….! Though I was young I knew that the thing is a waste of time. Even our hero of those days is not allowed to kiss the heroine unless there is a convenient bush around! Then what chance a villain has that too with an unwilling girl. Total waste of time which allows the hero to enter the scene and thrash the villain and get on with the group photo like climax.

Nearly everyday I am reminded of that scene when I pass through Duraisamy subway. Experienced and wise drivers know that it is best to have more left turns in their route and if not plan that way. Left turns normally do not affect the flow of traffic. Right turns cut through the traffic as we follow ‘Keep Left’ policy. Though I have seen U-turns(grrr..) in the subway the right turns from and into the subway immediately at the entrance which holds up the traffic, heats up the atmosphere and generally sets up the bad mood we need to be in while entering office!subway entries

November 3rd, 2008Left Right Left

Left turns are normally free here. But are they really free? Just imagine that you are taking a left turn. First you have to slow down then circumvent the autos parked in the street corners, horn, look to your right for any vehicles from that side and turn… No wait… look out for the vehicle parked there… another is cutting across to turn into the road you are coming out from… a vehicle from right suddenly picks up speed to prevent you from merging into the traffic…

Turning into any street or road is an ordeal here just because of the thoughtless parking culture among our people. Once again the ‘chaltha hai’ attitude. So long as nothing happens to them everything is fine.

They can whizz past closely with no horn or with horn which blasts, never mind you may get a heart attack or palpitation…

They can suddenly brake, take a U turn(even in a subway or overbridge!)…

They can blind you with high beam…

They can use side stand to park and take up extra space…
